Scary But True: 7 Toxic Ingredients Hiding in Your Skincare

You’ve seen the labels. You’ve squinted at the ingredients. Maybe even Googled one or two. Let’s be honest, it’s tough to know what’s actually good for your skin and what might be quietly doing harm behind the scenes.

Seven Toxic Ingredients Hiding in Your SkincareHere at Pharmacopia, we like to keep things simple. No sketchy stuff. No long science words you need a dictionary for. Just clean, plant-based body care we’ve been making for over 25 years.

Here are seven common ingredients that still show up in everyday products. They may be legal, but that doesn’t mean they belong on your skin. And just so you know, you’ll never find them in anything we make.

1. Parabens

Why they’re used: These preservatives help products last longer by keeping bacteria away. Sounds useful, right?

Why it’s not so great: Parabens can mess with your hormones by pretending to be estrogen. That kind of interference isn’t something your body needs. Some studies have even linked them to breast cancer and fertility issues.

What to look for on labels: Methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben

What we do instead: We don’t mess around. We use plant-based ingredients that do the job without the risk.

2. Phthalates

Why they’re used: These are often added to make products more flexible or to help fragrances stick around longer.

Why it’s a problem: Phthalates have been linked to hormone disruption, fertility problems, and even issues with development. On top of that, they’re rough on the environment.

What to look for on labels: They’re sneaky. Most of the time they’re hiding under vague terms like “fragrance” or “parfum.”

What we do instead: We only use essential oils to scent our products. No mystery blends, no hidden chemicals, and no compromises.

3. Synthetic Fragrance

Why it’s used: To give products a signature scent or that extra “fresh” feeling.

Why it’s a problem: The word "fragrance" might look harmless, but it can actually hide hundreds of chemicals. Some of those are known to cause allergic reactions, irritate your skin, or mess with your hormones.

What to look for on labels: Fragrance, parfum

What we do instead: We only use pure essential oils to scent our products. They smell great, they feel good, and there’s nothing hiding behind the label.

4. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)

Why it’s used: This ingredient is what gives soaps and shampoos that rich, foamy lather.

Why it’s not so great: SLS can be really harsh. It strips your skin and scalp of natural oils, which can lead to dryness, irritation, and inflammation. If you have sensitive skin, it can be especially uncomfortable.

What to look for on labels: Sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate

What we do instead: We use gentle, coconut-based cleansers that still get the job done without upsetting your skin.

5. Formaldehyde Releasers

Why they’re used: These are preservatives that help stop bacteria from growing in water-based products.

Why it’s a problem: Over time, they can release formaldehyde, which is a known carcinogen. Not something you want soaking into your skin.

What to look for on labels: DMDM hydantoin, quaternium-15, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea

What we do instead: We keep it simple and safe. No hidden nasties, just natural ways to keep our products fresh.

6. Triclosan

Why it’s used: You’ll often find this in antibacterial soaps, toothpaste, and other products meant to fight germs.

Why it’s a problem: Triclosan has been linked to hormone disruption, antibiotic resistance, and even issues with your thyroid.

What to look for on labels: Triclosan, triclocarban

What we do instead: We keep things clean the gentle way, using essential oils like lemon and citrus that offer natural antimicrobial support without the side effects.

7. Petroleum-Derived Ingredients

Why they’re used: These ingredients are added to lock in moisture and give products that smooth, slick feel.

Why it’s a problem: Unless they’re fully refined, things like mineral oil and petrolatum can be contaminated with harmful chemicals. They also come from fossil fuels, which isn’t great for your skin or the planet.

What to look for on labels: Mineral oil, petrolatum, paraffin, toluene

What we do instead: We stick with nourishing oils like jojoba, shea, coconut, and argan. They’re safer, naturally moisturizing, and way more Earth-friendly.
